Culture and applications of Porphyridium cruentum: main trends and projections

Porphyridium cruentum is a microalga that has multiple applications, from which valuable bioproducts such as phycoerythrin and sulfated polysaccharides are obtained. This research is an exploratory-descriptive study that carries out a systematic review with meta-analysis tools to analyze the trends in research on P. cruentum, its cultivation, and its main applications, with emphasis on the applications of the magnetic field (MF). A database of 851 articles was formed between 1914 - September 2022.  Bibliometric analysis was carried out, the main trending topics were identified, and specific aspects. It was shown that there is a marked scientific and commercial interest in Porphyridium cruentum, whose bioproducts have a wide spectrum of applications in the food, medical-pharmaceutical, energy, and cosmetic industries. The relevant topics are related to increasing the yield of bioproducts on a large scale, however, there is a limited application of the electromagnetic field for such purposes. It is reported for the species that cultivation conditions depend on the purposes for which the biomass is used. The most used crops are autotrophic, with LED lamp-type lighting in column photobioreactors with constant bubbling. Studies related to the applications of magnetic fields to P. cruentum cultures are limited, however, there are reports of the positive interference of magnetic fields on the growth and productivity of some species of microalgae, so it is suggested to use static magnetic field in stimulating the growth of P. cruentum.
