ARTHROPODS ASSOCIATED WITH MUSACEAE IN THE WESTERN REGION OF PANAMA

The aim of this study was to identify the arthropods associated with Musaceae in the western region of Panama. The study area corresponded to five locations in the province of Bocas del Toro and two in the province of Chiriquí. Four field trips were carried out during the period 2021-2022 and the farm owners were interviewed to describe the agronomic management of the crop. A photographic record was kept and samples of arthropods were collected using an entomological net, forceps, vials with 70% ethanol, and a lethal chamber. The specimens were prepared for identification in the laboratory and the Simpson diversity index was calculated by province. According to the results, in Bocas del Toro the farms have several cultivars, with densities between 2000-2500 plants per hectare and control pests by bagging bunches and using artisanal traps; In Chiriquí, farmers visited have a single cultivar at a density of 2000 plants per hectare and carry out conventional management. Regarding the arthropods associated with Musaceae, 24 taxa were identified in Bocas del Toro, located in nine orders, with seven feeding habits and 73 observed specimens. In Chiriquí, 24 taxa were also found, but corresponding to seven orders, with six feeding habits and 50 observed specimens. The Simpson diversity index was 0,94 for Bocas del Toro and 0,96 for Chiriquí. In conclusion, at least 24 arthropod taxa are associated with Musaceae in both provinces.
