EARLY DETECTION OF Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari, 1867) (COLEOPTERA: CURCULIONIDAE: SCOLYTINAE) IN ROBUSTA COFFEE CROPS

The Coffee Bean Borer (CBB) (Hypothenemus hampei) is the main insect pest that affects coffee cultivation. In Panama, efforts have been made towards its management and control; being the early detection of the pest, an important strategy to consider. The objective of this study was to carry out the early detection of H. hampei in robusta coffee crops (Coffea canephora) in Colon, Panama. Three locations were selected, La Cauchera (UTM: 17 P 600109, 1000749), Buena Vista (UTM: 17 P 642911, 1026510), and Boqueron Abajo (UTM: 17 P 658188, 1033713). A total of 75 field trips were made from January 2017 to June 2019 to record the presence of the pest. For this, 15 plants were randomly chosen per week, by location, in which two branches per plant were examined; thus, giving a total of 900 monitored plants (1800 branches). The percentage of infestation and a record of flowering were registered throughout the study. According to the results, in 2017 CBB was detected in all three locations in June, with an initial infestation of 0,24% in La Cauchera, 0,01% in Buena Vista, and 0,01% in Boqueron Abajo. In 2018, the initial presence of CBB occurred in the last week of June, but with a higher infestation in Buena Vista with 8,85%, Boquerón Abajo with 6,29%, and La Cauchera with 4,10%. In 2019, the presence of CBB occurred at the end of May in La Cauchera with 4,86% and in Buena Vista with 1,47%; while, in Boqueron Abajo at the end of June, with 3,78%. The initial blooms were located between December and January. In conclusion, early detection of CBB in robusta coffee occurred between May and June, at the locations of La Cauchera, Buena Vista and Boqueron Abajo, province of Colon.
