POTENTIAL YIELD OF Macadamia integrifolia MAIDEN & BETCHE IN THE COFFEE GROWING REGION OF ATOYAC, VERACRUZ

As a resu lt of the freeing of international grain coffee (Coffea arabica L.) prices, new production strategies are required which could offer a better economic stability. The coffee-macadamia (Macadamia integrifolia Maiden & Betche) system is one of the best alternatives for financial benefits. For this reason, the potential production of macadamia was analyzed for the coffee producing region of Atoyac, Veracruz, located at a similar latitude as the Hawaiian islands, the largest producing area in the world for macadamia. The climatic and edaphic conditions for macadamia development were determined by reviewing phenological studies performed in Hawaii, and the conditions present in the production areas of those islands. The results showed that the macadamia crop in the Atoyac region has a potential yield 40 % lower than that in Hawaii.
