FR 33 Preliminary analysis of lactation curves in water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) in southern region of Táchira State

This study was realized in the farm “Agropecuaria Palmichal”, south of Táchira State in order to determine which curves used to describe lactation explains the production in this species. In this sense, 40 water buffaloes were used, between 4 and 7 years and between 2 and 5 calvings separated in 4 groups: G1 (less than 100 days of lactation). G2 (between 100 and 200 days); G3 (between 200 and 300 days) and G4 (more than 300 days). This information was adjusted using, 4 curve models: I (Log-normal), II (Gaussiano); III (Lorentziano) and IV (ExtrVal). The analyzed variables were the coefficients of determination without adjusting (CDS), adjusted (CDA) and difference between both coefficients (DIF). The averages were 0.57, 0.45 and 0.13 for CDS, CDA and DIF respectively. The results showed highly significantly differences between groups (P<.01) for CDS and DIF, with the highest values for the animals of short lactations (G1). The obtained results indicate an effect of external factors on milk production with high sensibility of the species to these factors, producing abrupt changes in the production, causing that the information was not adjusted to the typical curves.
