NR 36. Urea and molasses as additives during Brachiaria brizantha silage preparation for growing steers
An experiment was performed in a comercial farm, located in a Tropical dry forest region, to study the effect of the addition of three urea levels (0, 0.5 and 1 %) and three molasses levels (0, 2, and 4%) during the preparation of 35 days old Brachiaria brizantha silage, on the average daily gain (ADG) and daily dry matter group intake (DMGI) of growing crossbred steers during the dry season. A total of 27 animals were used in a completely randomized design with a factorial arrangement. Analysis of covariance was performed. The animals grazed B. brizantha throught the experiment and were supplemented daily in groups with silage. There were not effects of treatments on the ADG. No interaction of molasses and urea was detected. However there was interaction for DMGI (P<.01). Addition of 1 % of urea decreased DMGI (2.054; 2.237 and 1.798 kg/day for 0; 0.5 and 1% respetively). Molasses at the 4 % level had a higher DMGI, than the 0% level (1.73; 1.96 and 2.20 kg/day respectively for 0; 2 and 4 %). Instead of highest DMGI 2.63 kg/day were reported for the combination 0.5 % of Urea and 4% of molasses. The Addition of urea and molasses during the preparation of silage is not necessary if forage of good quality is used.
