Groen of rood gewas: anthocyaanvorming en chlorofylafbraak onder LED
Among the hurdles on the road to large-scale implementation of LED in greenhouse horticulture is the unwanted purple coloration of leaves and stems. With the aim to find solutions for it, a study was conducted with funding from Greenhouse as Source of Energy (KaE), consisting of: 1- an inventory, 2- a literature study, and 3- a workshop. Undesirable purple coloration is common in ornamental, food and medicinal crops and can result in reduced ornamental value, loss of production or shorter shelf life. Anthocyanins are the natural pigments responsible for these colorations of the leaf, where they play a role in preventing photoinhibition (‘sunburn function’). They can also clean up harmful compounds and protect plants against stress from pests, diseases, drought and cold. Synthesis and regulation are very complex and influenced (indirectly) by many factors. High light intensities, UV, high blue (LED) light, low temperatures, high CO2 and N or P deficiency as well as too few sinks in the crop have a stimulating effect; FR in the LED spectrum has a suppressive effect. There are many interactions between environmental factors. Based on the insights gained, actions and tests are recommended that may prevent anthocyanin formation when growing under LED.
