The unifying power of sustainable development; towards balanced choices between people, planet and profit in agricultural production chains and rural land use: the role of science
This position paper presents an overview of the origin and meaning of the concept of sustainable development in various domains and their interrelationships, expressed as the People-Profit-Planet triangle. The role of Wageningen UR and its position in society is clarified: the three P domains are related to ecology, economics and social and cultural disciplines. Case studies, involving fisheries, pig production chains and a regional study in the Pantanal area, illustrate the difficulties and possibilities of achieving threefold sustainability. This paper is presented on the occasion of the Dies (85th anniversary) of Wageningen University
