A Statistical profile of the education system of selected Commonwealth countries

Drawing from public statistics, this paper considers the formal education system of those Commonwealth countries with populations of less than two million. The first part provides basic data on the 29 independent countries. This is used to give an indication of the geo-economic characteristics of small states and suggests possible groupings. From these groups, 16 countries are selected for more detailed consideration. The second part presents educational profiles of 16 countries, noting population profiles, adult literacy rates, schooling structures, enrolments, distribution of enrolment by level, numbers, type and size of institutions, teaching ratios, repeaters at first and second level, education at the tertiary level, and public expenditure on education
