Laedza Batanani: report of the 1976 Campaign

In 1976 the third Laedza Batanani campaign was held in the Bokalaka region of Botswana. These popular theatre arts make use of drama, puppetry, dancing and singing - At this festival an effort was made to facilitate social change by selecting fewer, clearer and more realistic objectives. Participants at a 1-day workshop selected as priority issues health education, sanitation and hygiene, cookery, nutrition and vegetable gardening. During the festival, a mobile team of 'actor-animateur' toured the five villages with performances and group discussion during the day and a film show in the evening. A follow-up programme was this time organized to reinforce the festival message. Evaluation of the festival shows that popular theatre is a successful means to create an awareness of community problems and to achieve changing attitudes.
