Partners meeting supports ECA's renewal

In an unprecedented meeting, representatives from 20 donor countries and institutions endorsed the process of renewal being undertaken by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA). Donor-partners responded by praising ECA for being in the vanguard of United Nations reform. Dr. Amoako noted that change may have to be imposed on others: change is self-imposed at ECA. A number of delegations indicated that the kind of reforms being undertaken by ECA would be cause for added support. Donors lauded ECA's efforts in such fields as bringing the informatics revolution to Africa, assisting regional cooperation, promoting women in development, assisting African states in development management and promotion of, the private sector, fostering South-South Cooperation, and in carrying out responsibilities in economic and social policy. While the purpose of the meeting was to obtain advice from partners on ECA's future Programs, a number of donors took the occasion to announce support for ECA's capacity building and program initiatives.
