Prospects for increased African coal production and utilization

The Lagos Plan of action( LPA) and the Final Act of Lagos (FAL), whose fundamental objectives are to lessen the excessive external dependence of African economies and achieve self-sustained growth in the African region were adopted against the background of worsening economic situation and poor development prospects for African countries. The plan envisages among other things the attachement of sovereignty over natural resources by African member states through the increased use of indigenous natural resources. The programme intends to lay the foundation for the phased development of building materials, metallurgical, mechanical, chemical and energy industries which offer a great potential for increased production and utilization of African coal.
