Somatic and neurobiologic development of mice exposed to variable offer of omega 3 fatty acids during perinatal life
The omega 3 and 6 fatty acids (n-3 and n-6) are functionally relevant for mammals growing and development. However, the absolute amount of n-3 and the n-6/n-3 ratio in the diet are still under discussion. At the end of gestation and lactation, body weight of dams was higher in C. Body length was lower in E pups vs C, D and A on days 7, 14 and 21 and body weight at weaning as well (10.39±0.1g vs 11.17±0.15g; 10.92±0.13g; 11.15±0.2g). Litter A tended to anticipate the acquisition of the remaining physical parameters. On day 15 only 92% of group E opened both eyes vs 100% in the rest. Neurobiological parameters: group A tended to first complete the righting and evasion and D, the negative geotaxis. Our evidence suggests that excessive consumption of n-3 would harm some parameters related to growth and development. Further studies will allow to define the optimal offer.
