Anthropogenic pollution affects not only the land, but also marine environments where it enhances bacterial production. In spite of the importance of pollution, the extent to which the pollution plume moves off-shore, as well as the abundance and composition of microorganisms associated with it, have not been studied. In order to fill this gap, we had a cruise in the area between Barcelona and Mallorca aboard the R/V García del Cid during September 2017, where we conducted 8 transects parallel to the coast of Barcelona. In the transects, we followed the concentration of particles and black carbon. We took also integrated samples for chemical analyses and for abundance and diversity of airborne microorganisms. Our results show that the concentration of particles in the air above the sea is highly influenced by the distance to the city but also by the direction and intensity of winds and by rainfall. Concentration of airborne microorganisms, bacteria and fungi, followed a different pattern, being less influenced by the distance to the coast.
