Bay of Biscay Seismic stratigraphy Facies architecture Sedimentary evolution Golfo de Vizcaya Estratigrafía sísmica Arquitectura de facies Evolución sedimentaria VII Congreso Geológico de España, 14-18 Julio 2008, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.-- 4 pages, 1 figure [EN] Analysis of sedimentary evolution from upper Eocene to Quaternary in the easternmost Cantabrian continental margin has been carried out by seismic profiles recovered during the MARCONI cruise. The stratigraphic division has been established based on the correlation with published seismic data. Six seismic units (1 to 6, from older to younger) and four main seismic sequences have been defined. The integration of seismic facies, stratal architecture and geological history analysis has allowed the reconstruction of its evolution. During Upper Eocene a syn-tectonic deposition of gravitative sediments and small turbidite fans occur. This scenario maintains during the Lower Oligocene until the interplay between the consecutive Mid Oligocene sea level falls and denudation of the emerging Cantabrian Mountains provokes an increase in sediment transference towards deep basin with formation of a thick stacking of slope aprons and sandy turbidity systems. During the Miocene predominates hemipelagic settling and the formation of proximal, small and starved turbidite systems in continental rise. Towards Upper Miocene a new period of high sediment transfer occurs that ended in the recent development of the large turbidite system created by the confluence of CapFerret, Santander and Torrelavega systems [ES] El análisis de la evolución sedimentaria desde el Eoceno superior al Cuaternario en el sector oriental del margen continental Cantábrico ha sido realizado mediante perfiles sísmicos adquiridos en la campaña MARCONI. La estratigrafía ha sido establecida por correlación con otros datos sísmicos publicados. Se han definido seis unidades sísmicas (1 a 6, de más antigua a más reciente) y cuatro secuencias sísmicas mayores. La integración de las facies sísmicas, la arquitectura estratigráfica y la historia geológica ha permitido reconstruir su evolución sedimentaria. Durante el Eoceno Superior ocurre una deposición sin-tectónica de sedimentos gravitativos y pequeños abanicos turbidíticos. Esta situación se mantiene durante el Oligoceno Inferior, hasta que la interacción entre descensos del nivel del mar durante el Oligoceno medio y la denudación de la emergente Cordillera Cantábrica provoca una intensa transferencia de sedimento hacia cuenca profunda con formación de potentes abanicos de talud y sistemas turbidíticos arenosos. Durante el Mioceno predomina la sedimentación hemipelágica y la formación de pequeños y desnutridos sistemas turbidíticos proximales sobre el ascenso continental. Hacia el Mioceno Superior ocurre un nuevo aumento de la transferencia de sedimento que culmina con el reciente desarrollo del gran sistema turbidítico donde confluyen los sistemas del CapFerret, Santander y Torrelavega Thanks to MARCONI Project (REN2001-1734 C03) and VEM 2003-20093-CO3 by MCyT, and PGIDIT06TAM31202 by Xunta de Galicia.
