Ermgassen, Philine S.E. zu 5th International Conference of the Native Oyster Restoration Alliance (NORA), Scaling-up European Oyster Reef Restoration, 6-8 November 2023, Middelburg, The Netherlands Reef ecosystems built by the European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis) are functionally extinct throug- hout their native range, and we have limited understanding of their past abundance, distribution, or other characteristics. Here we present data collated by the NORA Historical Ecology Working Group and expanded on through a Zoological Society of London led project. We draw on written documentary sources, published across 350 years, to establish the historical range and locations of flat oyster reefs, their extent, physical characteristics and associated com- munities. We summarise the evidence for the historical distribution of Ostrea edulis oyster reefs throughout its natural range. Additionally, evidence of the physical attributes of oyster reefs and biological community associated with them historically will be summarised. We present the resulting map of oyster reef presence at the ecosystem scale, together with as- sociated levels of confidence of oyster reef presence and demonstrate that oyster reefs were a dominant three-dimensional feature along much of the European coastline and some shallow shelf seas. Substantial abundances of oysters were reported from the lower intertidal zone down to 80 metres depth, with oyster reefs described predominantly on the scale of tens to hundreds of hec- tares in size. Finally, we present historical accounts of species associated with oyster reefs, which described a total of 190 macrofaunal species from 13 phyla, indicating this ecosystem supported a highly diverse community.
