Many submarine canyons, escarpments, seamounts, and outer continental shelf and slope areas support communities dominated by scleractinian cold-water corals or coral gardens composed of a diverse fauna of octocoral and black coral species. Other areas across the Mediterranean Sea show evidence of past prosperity of these communities expressed by accumulations of fossil cold-water corals. Here, we review the knowledge of the present and past occurrence of cold-water corals in the Mediterranean Sea, highlighting specific features and discussing the threats that they are exposed to under high human-induced pressure in this semi-enclosed basin This study was supported by the German Science Foundation (DFG) and the Cluster of Excellence “The Ocean Floor—Earth’s Uncharted Interface”, and by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Program, under the MSC Project Habiss (Grant Agreement No. GA890815), Atlas project (Grant Agreement No. 678760) and iAtlantic project (Grant agreement No. 818123).
