Calbet, Albert ... et al.-- 14 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables Intensive sampling at the coastal waters of the central Red Sea during a period of thermal stratification, prior to the main seasonal bloom during winter, showed that vertical patches of prokaryotes and microplankton developed and persisted for several days within the apparently density uniform upper layer. These vertical structures were most likely the result of in situ growth and mortality (e.g., grazing) rather than physical or behavioural aggregation. Simulating a mixing event by adding nutrient-rich deep water abruptly triggered dense phytoplankton blooms in the nutrient-poor environment of the upper layer. These findings suggest that vertical structures within the mixed layer provide critical seeding stocks that can rapidly exploit nutrient influx during mixing, leading to winter bloom formation This study was funded by King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, and project PROTOS (CTM2009-08783) from the Ministry of Science and Innovation of Spain to AC Peer Reviewed 2015-07-13T08:58:02Z 2015-07-13T08:58:02Z 2015-06-11 2015-07-13T08:58:02Z artículo http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501 doi: 10.1038/srep11240 issn: 2045-2322 e-issn: 2045-2322 Scientific Reports 5: 11240 (2015) http://hdl.handle.net/10261/117866 10.1038/srep11240 26062783 http://dx.doi.org/10.1038/srep11240 open Nature Publishing Group |
