Influence of soil type and planting date on fibre quality in chad

In 1986, a trial involving two varieties (Q70 and K14), three planting dates (T0, T0 + 15, TO + 30) at 15 day intervals and two soil types (rich and poor) was set up in the Bebedjia station in Chad. The To planting date stands for planting carried out at the earliest possible date (June 6). The types of soil were selected according to their production potential and their organic matter content Rich soil means a production potential of about 4 tons of seed cotton per hectare, while poor soil corresponds to 1.5 tons of seed cotton per hectare. There was no indication of mineral deficiency. Our goal was to study the influence of these various factors on the technical characteristics of the fibre and especially on the fineness and maturity. For this reason, the two varieties selected were very different in maturity. Indeed, our concern in selecting the planting dates and soil types was to obtain the widest possible range of maturity. In order to complete this study, a diallel trial involving six varieties and 26 trials on the 070 variety in a farming environment was developed. The trial was aimed at specifying the various genetic parameters of the fineness and maturity characteristics, in particular their heritability. In the last few years, the commercial services of cotton companies have been asking for varieties with a low micronaire value (less than 4.0). They want a fine and well-matured fibre in order to meet the new requirements of the spinningmill owners. This is why we decided to study these specific properties. The results of these trials will be presented in two parts. The first one will deal with the influence of soil type and planting date on the fibre and yarn characteristics. The second part will give a detailed description of fineness and maturity.
