Local procurement from small-scale farmers by rural supermarkets in South Africa

This chapter focuses on the innovative schemes of two rural supermarket stores in the Limpopo Province of South Africa to source fresh vegetables locally from individual small-scale farmers. We gathered data during 2006 using semi-structured personal interviews with the store owners and managers. We also interviewed a sample of small-scale vegetable farmers who currently supply the two stores, or who used to do so. We did a follow-up survey in June 2007 to enrich our qualitative data with further quantitative observations.
