The internationalization of food retailing : Opportunities and threats for small-scale producers
This chapter sets the global scene for the individual country case studies that make up the major part of the book. In it we attempt to explain the process of restructuring that is taking place in food systems as a result of global supermarket expansion and the implications, real and potential, for small-scale producers and rural poverty. We begin by describing the globalization of food retailing, then focus on the implications for small-scale producers and the need for adaptation.
