Genetic diversity of nitrogen-fixing rhizobia associated to Acacia mangium in its native sea : North Queensland, Australia [n° L075]

Acacia mangium is a tropical legume tree increasingly used in industrial plantations in the humid tropics, mainly in Southeast Asia. A. mangium nodulates spontaneously in its native area (North Queensland (Australia) and Papua-New-Guinea) and in each of the zones where it had been introduced (Asia, Africa, Oceania). Different inoculation assays in the zones of introduction have evidenced the high symbiotic capacities of the australian strains over the local strains. 80 isolates originating from 20 referenced trees representative of the main provenances of North Queensland have been isolated. Characterization of strains was conducted by RFLP analysis of the amplified 16S rRNA gene plus the intertranscribed 16S/23S rRNA spacer. Sequencing of the amplified fragments of two of the strains allowed to classified them as Bradyrhizobium, with two species: japonicum and spp. The observed diversity is discussed in relation to the provenance of the corresponding sampled trees.
