Propuesta de un sello de calidad para productos de la pequeña agroindustria rural en America Latina

Social circumstances, cultural practices, and the availability of local natural resources, insure the authenticity and regionality of a wide variety of good quality food products from small rural agro-industries. When guarantees are given of required quality characteristics for specific food products, the informed consumer is willing to pay a higher price for them. While these consumers represent a small part of the Latin American market, as interest and knowledge have increased over recent years, so too has the number of such consumers. The objective of this paper is to present the potential that quality seals have as a marketing tool for agro-industrial food products. A proposal is made for a quality seal (Latinamerican farm quality product) which would represent a product with the following differentiated characteristics: 1) obtained by traditional know-how, 2) produced in an environmentally sound manner, and 3) elaborated by small producers who ensure fair labor practices for their workers. A model has been worked out for a quality control system for the granting of such a seal and for the verification of compliance with the conditions required for products to bear the seal. The forgoing offers on a national level an alternative means of supporting commercialization of agro-industrial products of guaranteed quality, with the intention of improving local economies and fostering environmental sustainability for small regional producers in Latin America.
