Chez les Mayas et les Aztèques, le caoutchouc comptait beaucoup car il participait au jeu de balles, sport national. Ses propriétés l'avaient fait entrer dans la philosophie et la religion aztèque et l'avaient conduit à être consommé lors de repas rituels après des sacrifices humains. Deux plantes locales, le Castilloa elastica et le Parthenium argentatum fournissaient le caoutchouc avec des technologies particulières d'extraction
