Stabilization and utilization of pyrolytic oils

Wood pyrolysis gives important amounts of condensable by-products named pyroligneous wich represent 50 % of the raw material; from those juces some interesting compounds can be extracted: methanol, acetic acid, furfural, phenolic compounds .... Since the oil crisis, some studies have been undertaken to modernize old processes. In this context, we decided to research new economical applications of the pyrolitic oils (or tars) wich is the organic heavy fraction (15 % of the pyroligneous). In this paper we report possible biological uses such as wood preservation. Such an application becomes possible, due to the stability of the product during the storage and the use. That needs an evolution study of those oils, whose first step is a thorough charaterization of those substances. In a first time the chemical structure of the compounds of this very complicated mixture, was studied.
