Mission report : methodological support for a survey of the productivity of cattle rearing systems in the M'Barara dairying basin, Uganda, 10th-20th July 1998

This mission was in support of the project to improve dairy production in the M'barara region (M'Barara dairying basin, Uganda). The first phase of this project was based on a one-off interview-based survey of a random sample of farmers. The survey had a dual aim: (1) to draw up a typology of farmers and (2) to compare the productivity of the different animal production systems. Aims of the mission was to finalize the survey questionnaire, optimize the related database, and test the methodology to be used concerning herd productivity. The calculus of herd productivity needs the estimation of demographic rates as fecundity, mortality and exploitation rates. Two estimation methods (by farmer interviews) were tested on real herds and are discussed in the present report.
