A mountain of meat and bone meal
Following the extension of the 'temporary' ban on the use of meat and bone meal (MBM) in all animal feed, the EU is facing a massive MBM disposal problem. Although the capacity exists to incinerate and dispose of EU production of MBM, this capacity is insufficient to cope with the 1.1 million tonne backlog which now exists. This mountain is unlikely to be removed soon, given the decreasing use of MBM in animal feeds worldwide which has occurred in the wake of the BSE crisis.
