The keepers of the temple
The costs of maintenance and cleaning in a market can be expensive for traders when the work is carried out by council services. In Bobo, the costs of h 4,500 are shared out on the basis of the space occupied by each trader. In the Yeoville market of Johannesburg, South Africa, traders have banded together and formed an association. They take care of the maintenance and daily cleaning tasks, and manage the market, in consultation with consumers. The council, which used to perform these tasks, now provides technical support. The result: savings in costs, better allocation of stands and better security
