El banco de germoplasma del Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical (CIAT) mantiene 36.000 materiales de frijol, la mayoría de Phaseolus vul garis, originarios de Mesoamérica y Suramérica. CIAT distribuye 5000-6000 muestras/año a usua rios alrededor del mundo. Un análisis de los patrones de distribución de estas muestras revela que los científicos del CGIAR, la mayoría fitome joradores del CIAT, recibieron 54% de los mate riales, para estudiarlos y encontrar resistencia a insectos y enfermedades y tolerancia a sequía y suelos pobres. Estos materiales se usaron para producir 230 variedades mejoradas que fueron distribuidas a usuarios en países en desarrollo en Latinoamérica y África, cuyo valor en aumento de producción se ha calculado en US$1.15 mil millones. Se han distribuido también materiales a universidades y sistemas nacionales de investiga ción agrícola (790 usuarios en varios países). Sus investigaciones han aumentado nuestro conoci miento de la evolución, domesticación y genética de los frijoles. Un análisis de flujos entre regiones demuestra que esta colección ha beneficiado a usuarios de varias regiones del mundo. Aun los usuarios en Mesoamérica, principal donante de muestras, obtuvieron un mayor número de materiales que los que donaron. Las actividades de colección, conservación e intercambio de materiales representan una valiosa inversión y una necesidad para el desarrollo agrícola. The genebank of the International Centre for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) holds 36,000 acces sions of beans, of which the majority are Phaseolus vulgaris, most of it originating in Mesoamerica and South America. CIAT has distributed 5,000-6,000 samples/yr to users around the world. An analysis of the patterns of distribution of samples revealed that CGIAR scientists, for the most part/mostly CIAT’s bean breeders, received 54% of the total distributions, screening almost all the conserved material for resistance to pests and diseases and tolerance to drought and poor soils. They used these materials to produce and make available 230 improved varieties to users in developing countries in Latin America and Africa, the value of which, in increased production, has been estimated to over USD $1.15 billion. Material has also been distributed to universities and national research programmes (790 users in various countries). Research carried out with these materials has contributed to our understanding of the evolu tion, domestication and genetics of beans. An analysis of flows between regions revealed that the collection has benefited users from around the world. Even users from the Mesoamerican region obtained more samples from the genebank than the number donated.
