El objetivo de este estudio fue caracterizar el efecto combinado de aprovechamiento y hurac{87}n en la din{87}mica de los bosques impactados, un a-o y medio despu{nonjoin}s del hurac{87}n Mitch. Se utilizó un muestreo estratificado con parcelas seleccionadas al azar dentro de bosques intervenidos y no intervendos durante la última década. Para obtener datos más confiables sobre la abundancia de la regeneración de los diferentes tamaños (brinzales1 y latizales altos y bajos2)se realizó un muestreo adicional. El reclutamiento y la mortalidad fueron mayores en bosque intervenido, particularmente en las categorías de latizales,esto quizás debido a que el huracán causó más aperturas en bosque. La tasa de mortalidad fue mayor en el bosque intervenido, pero menor que la tasa de reclutamiento. La causa de la mortalidad fue difícil de determinar. Además, se encontró una reducción considerable en el número de árboles que pasaron de la categoría de brinzales a latizales. Los latizales altos y de mejor forma de copa se encontraron en lugares con mejores condiciones de luz. Los latizales bajos generalmente se encontraron en condiciones de poca iluminación. Esto indica que los tratamientos silviculturales, que mejoran la iluminación de latizales, podrían beneficiar su vigor y supervivencia. Los datos confirman la importancia de mantener suficientes árboles semilleros durante el aprovechamiento. The objective of this study was to characterize the combined effect of Hurricane Mitch and timber harvesting on the dynamics of impacted forests, a year and a half after the disturbance. The methodologies employed were those applied by CATIE's Natural Forest Management Unit. In addition, a diagnostic sampling scheme was implemented to complement plot data with additional information. Recruitment and mortality were found to be greater in harvested and managed forests, especially among saplings. Greater recruitment may be due to the creation of larger gap sizes in harvested forests. The causes of mortality were often impossible to determine. The rate of mortality was greater in the selectively harvested forests, but was found to be less than the rate of recruitment. In the development of seedlings into saplings a drastic reduction in the number of individuals was observed in all sites for all species. Saplings with larger and better formed crowns were found in better light conditions. Small saplings, in general, were found in conditions of poor illumination. Silvicultural treatments directed at improving light conditions of the saplings might improve their vigor and s u rvival.
