Récolte et analyse des données statistiques relatives a la pêche au chalut en Tunisie au cours des 25 dernières années: 1946-1971.

Statistical analysis of trawl fishing gives representation of the evolution of trawling and relative abundance of benthic fishers in Tunisiaan waters, to allow adequate definitions for rational means of continued exploitation. Studies of al cruise reports and calculation of theoretical production of the cruises from principal Tunisian harbours indicates levels of exploitation are not the same among various areas. Northern Tunisian fishing grounds are harvested with larger trawlers with >250 HP, equipped with fathometers, but producing catches far below the theoretical production levels. Extending cruises to 72 hrs, instead of the traditional 24 hrs to fish further from shore would be expected to increase port productions in northern regions. In the South, trawlers of Sousses and Mahdia exploiting regions known for their richness, typically go on short cruises, fishing near the coast. Port production would be predicted to improve with addition of better equipped vessels fishing year round on more extended cruises. In the south east, trawling grounds typified by depth of 50-80 m have been subject to intensive trawling since 1965. The port of Sfax produced more than predicted by biologists. To prevent over exploitation. the fleet should be reduced in lower horse power vessels (<200 HP) and increased in vessels >200 HP to increase exploitation on grounds deeper than 100 m.
