Distribution, refugiums and separate populations of benthic glacial relicts in the eastern part of the Baltic Sea

1856 samples collected at 820 stations were used for a detailed overview on the distribution and ecology of the benthic glacial relicts in the investigated area. The populations of: (1) the brackish-water forms of relicts - Mesidothea entomon (L.), Pontoporeia affinis Lindstroem, Heterocyprideis sorbyana (Jones), Paracyprideis fennica (Hirchmann); and (2) the marine forms of relicts - Halicryptus spinulosus Siebold, Pontoporeia femorata (Kroyer) were studied. The dependence of the populations of relicts on biotic factors was described. The data on ecology, feeding and spatial distribution of different species and assemblages of bottom fauna, including the glacial relicts, were discussed. The conclusions on the genetic connections between different populations were drawn.
