On the role of the River Daugava in the replenishment of the stocks of spring spawning fish

The role of the River Daugava is important in replenishment of the stocks of commercial fish of the Gulf of Riga (Baltic Sea). Smelt (Osmerus eperlanus L.), vimba bream (Vimba vimba L.), bream (Abramis brama L.), pikeperch (Lucioperca lucioperca L.) and perch (Perca fluviatilis L.) spawn in the lower reaches of the river. The quantitative estimates of larval abundance of the fish was used based on the samples taken in the river in 1962-1964. The influence of hydrological and meteorological factors on the species composition of ichthyoplankton was discussed.
