An experiment on the dispersion and distribution of petroleum in a water tank: part 1.

This report gives the results of a fundamental experiment on the dispersion and distribution of crude oil in a water tank which is 88 cm long, 43 cm wide and 50 cm high and contains 106 liters of water. As the initial state of the experiment, 1 ml of crude oil was added to the water surface in the tank, and then dispersion state of the oil was observed with time. About half a year later, distribution of the oil (in percentage) in the water tank was found as follows : 81. 8% of the total oil in the tank was distributed as the surface oil film, 4. 8% as the dispersion oil particles in the water, 11. 3% as the oil adhered to the glass wall at the boundary of water and air, and 2. 6% as the oil sediments at the bottom of the tank. According to the measurement of infrared ray absorption spectrum of those samples, the spectrum of the surface oil and that of oil particles in the water are similar to that of the crude oil, but, as regards the oil adhered to the glass wall and the oil sediments at the bottom of the tank, the absorbance of about 1700 cm-1 in wave number indicated greater values than that of the crude oil.
