Characterization and evaluation of the different coconut varieties on Hainan Island (China).
Data are tabulated on agronomic and quality characters evaluated in 7 varieties of coconut palm (Cocos nucifera) grown on Hainan island, China. Tolerance of strong winds (typhoons) and low temperatures were assessed by examining a computer data set (198095). MAWA (Malayan Dwarf X West African Tall) and WY78 (Malayan Dwarf X Hainan Tall) Fl hybrids gave a good overall performance, and flower earlier (3 to 4 years after planting) than Hainan Tall, the most cultivated variety on the island.
