The regulatory roles of natural enemies of some oil palm insect pests.

Outbreaks of insect pests attacking oil palm have occurred in many oil palm growing areas worldwide. The natural enemies of these pests have been studied in some of the areas where outbreaks have been reported. It has been the consensus that these natural enemies have contributed to minimising the pest outbreaks if suitably encouraged, particularly through judicious field upkeep in oil palm plantations. The destruction of such an environment by indiscriminate use of agrochemicals and severe weatherconditions could lead to a reduction in the population of natural enemies, thereby favouring outbreaks. A list of oil palm pests in Malaysia, Indonesia and Central America and their natural enemies is appended.
