Mass rearing of anastrepha (diptera: tephritidae) fruit flies a demographic analysis
mass rearing demographic model was applied to three species of Anastrepha fruit flies: A. ludens (Loew), A. obliqua (Macquart), and A. serpentina (Wiedemann). All flies were field collected as larvae from infested fruits and later sorted by pupal weight. The effects of size on mass-rearing demographic parameters were determined. The number of pupae produced per female was higher for the large flies. The optimal discard age was similar for both large and small flies and was longer than the optimal discard age reported for other laboratory reared tephritids. Age distribution analysis showed that the adults represent less than 1% of the standing population at the facility
