The effect of spatial arrangement on the growth, yield and management practices of robusta coffee in Ghana

The effects of different spatial arrangements of robusta coffee [Coffea canephora] from 1.5 x 3 to 3 x 3 m giving plant densities of 2222 to 1111 per hectare, respectively, were investigated at two locations in Eastern Ghana in 1991 and 1993. Significantly bigger plants were obtained at 3 x 3 m than other treatments at Bieni two years after planting, but not at Tafo. There was a general tendency towards increasing yields with increasing plant density but there was no difference in the labour required for weeding. The time required for harvesting was directly proportional to plant density and yield.
