Coffee berry disease: a potential threat to Arabica coffee growing worldwide

Coffee berry disease (CBD) on Arabica coffee (Coffea arabica), caused by Colletotrichum kahawae, can result in fruit fall rates of between 20 and 50 percent of the total crop. The disease is currently restricted to Africa, but is a major threat to the mainArabica coffee growing zones worldwide, particularly Latin America, where the relatively uniform dwarf type planting material used is propitious to expression of the disease. Creating resistant cultivars is now a priority in all the countries affected bythe disease, while the adoption of appropriate crop techniques is one of the main steps taken to control the disease.
