Stimulation of pancreatic secretion by coffee

During the past few years considerable attention was given to epidemiological studies on coffee consumption and pancreatic cancer. Up to date, there is no convincing evidence that coffee could induce pancreatic tumours. In order to obtain more information about the effects of coffee or coffee constituents on the pancreas, we carried out a series of experiments studying the function of the exocrime pancreas after coffee consumption in the rat. The results indicate that: coffee induces a slight hypertrophy of the pancreas, that is characterized by increased trypsine, lipase and amylase content of the gland, coffee increases the secretion of pancreatic enzymes when the secretion is initiated by food. It does not influence the resting pancreas, caffeine appears to potentiate the effects of cholecystokinin. It does not stimulate the gland when given alone. This potentiating effect could explain the slight hypertrophy of the gland observed in the rat after coffee consumption. The effects of coffee on pancreatic function could be explained by a potentiating effect of caffeine or other coffee constituents of the hormonal stimulation of the gland
