Studies on watering to solve coffee breeding constraints
The role of water to break the dormancy of flower buds in connection with robusta coffee breeding was studied in the Kaliwining experimental garden of the Jember Research Institute for Estate Crop. The garden is on an altitude of 45 m, the plants were 31 years old, at 3 x 3 m spacing, and under L21 shading. The robusta coffee clones BP 42, BP 378, and BP 534 were in water stress (September 1982) with leaf water potential from -14.892 to -12.849 bars. Their flower buds were simultaneously in a white candle stage and blossoming after being watered in its root area. Based on the simultaneous stages of flowering it is expected that coffee breeding can be improved
