Results of field experiments, Ruiru, 1: Long term effects of various cultural practices on Coffea arabica L.; yield and quality in Kenya

Long term effects of various cultural practices on Coffea arabica L yield and quality and their interactions were investigated for a period of seventeen years at Ruiru, East of the Rift Valle, Kenya. Mulching gave the highest response on clean coffee yield and quality among the various cultural practices investigated. Clean weeding performed slightly better than partial clean weeded control. Non significant higher clean coffee yields were realised where capped multiple stem system was practiced but lower proportions of percent grade "A" sized beans were obtained as compared to uncapped multiple stem system. Irrigated coffee increased clean coffee yields and the proportions of grade "A" beans significantly more than the non-irrigated coffee. Application of nitrogen fertilizer increased clean coffee yields significantly, especially where irrigation, partial weed control and capped multiple stem system were practiced
