Distribution of caffeine in Arabica and Robusta coffee plants
Studies on nine-month and seven-year old Coffea arabica L. S.795 and C. canephora Pierre ex Froehner S.274 plants have shown that all the parts including roots and wood contain considerable quantities of caffeine. In vegetative parts caffeine accumulates in a basipetal succession (leaves>stem>roots). In seven-year old plants, arabica beans of ripe fruits have significantly lower caffeine than robusta beans while in the fruit coat and mucilage the alkaloid was significantly more in arabica than in robusta, except in the parchment. In both the age groups the caffeine content was significantly more in robusta than in arabica
