Development of Helopeltis spp. on several pods of cocoa clones and hybrids and its preference, under laboratory condition

A study on the development and preference of Heloptis spp. on pods of some cocoa clones and hybrids had been carried out at the Entomology Laboratory of the Indonesian Coffee and Cocoa Research Institute (ICCRI). This research is aimed to find out the biology and development of Helopeltis spp., especially for its preference to specific cocoa pods under laboratory condition. Based on nymph period, adult weight, percentage of egg hatching, spot number, and degree of pod damage caused by the insect, it could be concluded that pods of ICS 6, Sca 6, Sca 12, and GC 7 x ICS 6 are not appropriate for the development of by the insect in comparison to the other pods tested. Consequently the nymph period kept in the above mentioned hybrid clones tend to be longer, and the imago weight tend to be lighter.
