Avaliacao de gastoxin e fertoxin na fumigacao de cacau armazenado

Brazilian cacao beans are fumigated with Gastoxin (phosphine) prior to shipment to the consumer countries. Recently, a new commercial phosphine insecticide (Fertoxin) became available on the market, so two experiments were carried out in order to compare the effectiveness of the usual Gastoxin with Fertoxin in the fumigation of bagged dry cacao. In the first experiment Superior classified cacao beans were used while in the second experiment downgraded cacao beans were used. A randomized block experimental design was used with three treatments and three replications on different occasions. Each treatment was based on a stack of 25 bags which were fumigated with 1 g of phosphine for 72 hours. The results show that the effectiveness of Gastoxin and Fertoxin does not differ in their control of insect pests of bagged cacao beans. According to the insect species, effectiveness varied from 99,4 to 100 percent control for the Superior classified cacao beans, and from 78.5 to 100 percent control for the downgraded cacao beans.
