Cacao (Theobroma cacao L.): the influence of budwood cutting frequency on shoot dwarfing

Five budwood cutting frequencies had been tested for their influence on the regenerating ability of cacao budwood trees. The frequencies tested are as follows: 1. Once every 4 months (all existing budwood cut off). 2. Once every 5 months (all existing budwood cut off). 3. Once every 6 months (all existing budwood cut off). 4. Once every 6 months (one shoot left as assimilator). 5. Control, 2 to 3 budwoods cut off, not at the same time at the age of 8 months (standard practice). Based on the measurements of the budwood length and girth it can be concluded, that prolonging the cutting period up to 6 months, did not create a condition for better regeneration, even if one shoot was left as assimilator. When a high frequency was combined with a high intensity of cutting, it would result in a high percentage of death of the budwood trees
