Studies on some aspects of the soil phase of Phytophthora palmivora (Butl.) Butl.

A general and widespread occurrence of Phytophthora palmivora (Butl.) Butl. on the soil surface of a cocoa farm was observed during the rainy season, but a higher concentration of the pathogen was detected around the base of cocoa trees. This distribution of the fungus in soils varied according to the nature of the soils, and it occurred more frequently and to greater depths in well-drained loamy soils than in sandy soils. The fungus was less active in the soil during the dry, than in the wet season and it probably survived through the dry months in a dormant state. Increased activity of the pathogen was stimulated by wetting infested soils at 25 centigrade grade
