The world climate programme and biosphere reserves
The study of the global atmosphere-ocean-cryosphere-solid earth climate system, its variations and impacts on social and economic activities is complex and multidisciplinary. The objectives of the the World Climate Programme (WCP) and its component programmes (climatic data, applications, impact studies and research) are summarized. A brief description is presented of climate system monitoring and existing capabilities for the global observation of several relevant parameters. Future requirements for climate system monitoring are also included. Possible areas of cooperation between the UCP and the MAB Biosphere Reserve Programme are suggested.
