A system of terrestrial biosphere reserves for the Mediterranean

With its wealth of plant and animal life and extreme ecological heterogeneity, the Mediterranean region is one of the areas in the world whose natural ecosystems are the most highly diversified, but at the same time most at risk, primarily as a result of increased human interference of all kinds, particularly during the past century. It would thus appear to constitute an ideal model for the organization and creation of a system of biosphere reserves.
