Experiencias e resultados de intervencoes silviculturais na floresta tropical úmida brasileira

Experiences and results from silvicultural interventions in the Brazilian tropical moist forest. The first timber inventories in the Brazilian Amazon were carried out by the end of the 1950s when the concept of forest management was also introduced. From thencefoward many studies have been performed, such as on phenology, nursery, species trials, forest enrichment, plant nutrition, gap dynamics and succession, structural analysis, harvesting, silvicultural system trials and others. However, forest management on a sustained yield basis for Amazonian forests has not come true yet. This paper focuses some researches and their relevant results which have been performed in Santarem and in Manaus -highlightning others from other regions in the Amazon - which are very important for forest management implementation in the region.
